During and after Log and Transfer FCP keeps losing track of my clips, telling me I need to reconnect. When I try to reconnect the original clip seems to have been renamed and the content will have changed. The whole thing becomes incredibly confusing until I have to start the whole project again and then the process starts over.

I am editing in Final Cut Pro 6.0.5 and trying to ingest AVCHD clips from a Panasonic AF101 recording to SDHC 16GB cards. I’m on a MacBook Pro running Mac OS 10.5.8.

My workflow up to now has been: transfer the data from the SDHC cards to a hard drive (trying to keep the file structure) then go into FCP to log and transfer.

All was going well until this weird behaviour started and now clips are disconnecting seemingly randomly all the time.

I’d be incredibly grateful for any help as I feel totally out of my depth and at the moment my whole project is on the line til I solve this!

    Thanks

Have you tried the reveal in finder option for the unconnected media and see if it points to it? You made sure to set your scratch disks and not move the material? When you log do you rename the clips as you ingest? Is your harddrive unstable? Full? Near full? Is this the only project that does this? Did you defrag your drive? (never do that to a fcp drive) If you export an xml of the proj and look into it does it have the right file path to the media? Are you running other apps at the same time? Is fc automatically ejecting your hd? In my experience it is not a good idea to use a boot drive for your media. Use disk utility to verify your hd and repair with the original disc if necessary. I have used disk warrior and onyx for some time now to keep the machine cleaned and rebuilding the directories (not sure if it has anything to do with this prob but I try to fix and clean everything I can) and all has run smoothly. Can you upgrade to snow leopard? Did you trash the prefs files? Have you removed old render files, auto saves, thumbnail and waveform caches? (not sure it will help but anything is worth a try)
A very odd problem indeed. Sorry can’t be more help.

Reality? What did you make it?

Thankyou Keith, I’ll try all of those (even the ones I’ve already tried!). I might have to look some things up but as you say: anything’s worth a try.

Thankyou Dave, unfortunately I’ve got past the “import as ProRes via Log and Transfer” stage. It’s after that that clips start mysteriously going offline.

Just incase this helps anyone in a similar bind: after going through a few of Keith’s (excellent) suggestions to no avail I tried Clipwrap (which costs) to convert my footage and renamed all my clips before going anywhere near fcp then just imported them rather than doing Log and Transfer. This may be very clumsy but it seems to be working for now. Thanks guys.

Gareth, did you happen to find a resolution to the problem of AVCHD files going offline in FCP? Or are you still using your Clipwrap work around? I’m having the same problem.

    HI Dave,

while I searched for a solution for my problem, I found this thread here.
When I do Log & Transfer with my AVCHD footage from the Af-101, I have in the the L & T window only the option for ingesting as ProRes and Intermediate, but I miss the option for ProRes HQ.
    Any idea why?

    Thanx.

    Sascha

    Hi

Did you get to the bottom of this? I have this issue now…driving me mad.
