Clips clean, seq clicks & pops
I just worked on a show (half hour) in DVCPRO HD 1080i. I use a Panasonic DVCPRO HD 1400 to ingest/output. The clips were fine no clicks but when we tried to output it sounded like someone was crinkling cellophane in the background. The odd thing was we were able to output the show as an aiff and then send it to audio post where it played fine. Then they laid it to tape. Our audio people say it is a clocking issue. I don’t see what I can do differently… 1080i in, 1080i seq, 1080i out. Same codec and frame rate all the way through.
We tried: 2 different Macs, 2 different Panasonic 1400s, FCP Rescue 6, and created new projects with just one clip. One thing I observed was playing out the computer speakers sounded fine, playing through the deck via firwire clicked. We have done 720 shows with the same set up with no problem so I wasn’t expecting one with 1080i.

Do they click or pop when playing back in the timeline or just on output?

When I’m monitoring the audio out of FCP thru my deck (Panasonic AJ 1400) and/or outputting. If I listen thru the computer speakers its clean.

If you’ve tried trashing prefs, you can check the cable if it’s loose or NG. Do you have another laying around? If you have another deck or camcorder, try that next.

It must be a setting on the 1400. when I swap the 1400 for a 93(pro50 deck) everything is fine. I’ve swapped all the cables, speakers, cpu’s. Are there any non intuitive settings for 1080 on the 1400?

I’ve swapped everything and the interesting thing is when I swapped the CPU back to a G5 the clicks and pops go away. All the systems are 10.5.2 with FCP 6.0.2.
Audio people that hear this swear its a clocking problem. My chief engineer thinks there must be an incapability between the INTEL CODECS and the codecs in the deck.
The crackles are only heard when there is sound. You won’t hear the crackle in silence. This I’m told is a classic clocking problem.
Listen closely, you might hear it.
Intel Mac, Panasonic 1400, firewire interface, 1080 or 720.
