Clip Speed error in FCP 5
I am operating FCP 5. When I try to affect a Clip’s Speed by either control clicking and choosing speed or going to Modify I get the following caption:
“Unable to complete command. A conflict occured during a trim operation.”
I have successfully changed Clip Speed’s in the past. It does not matter what lip I try and affect. I get the same error. I am sure I may have accidentally bumped off a setting and I have read through Chapter 3 relative to Clip Speed to see what it is I may have done.
Any thoughts?

Yes. This is happening because FCP is silly in the way it handles speed changes. When you do this in timeline, the timeline will shift by the amount you have changed the clip. For instance, if you slow the clip down, the timeline will want to shift to the right as you are adding more time. Obviously there’s something in the timeline that is preventing this shift (a trim operation) and thankfully, FCP is giving a warning not to do this. The easiest way to work on a speed change is to match frame back to the original source file (the keyboard shortcut is option-command-f). The clip will then load in the viewer. Perform your speed change from the viewer (command-j) then edit that clip into the timeline using in and out points like you would with any three point edit.

This is happening with every clip I try to effect. Is that normal? Reading up on three point edits. Have not done one before. I’ll get it. Thanks Jeremy

You mean every clip that you effect with speed or you get this message on other effects?
Three point edit is simple. Mark an in, mark an out, then mark an in (or out) on your timeline. 1-2-3.
