  • Client wants to finish FCP show on Avid – Problem?

I am co-producing a doc for TV. We shot and edited in DVCPro HD in Final Cut Pro. The client wants to do the final edit at their facilities on the East Coast (we’re in San Francisco) and prefers to use their HD Avid system and editor. What difficulties should we expect if we show up with our Quicktime wrapped DVCPro HD files on a 1.5TB drive and the FCP rough-cut edit to turn over for finishing?

I am not yet aware of what specific Avid system they use other than it is HD capable and the client is a major cable network. Would it make any difference what Avid system is used?

BTY current format is 720p 23.97 (primarily from Varicam)

The Avid can’t use your media, the Avid will want to redigitize your footage. Either bring them an EDL or an OMF exported from FCP using Automatic Duck’s Pro Export FCP

    https://www.automaticduck.com/pefcp/

After they get your sequence in they will be able to batch digitize your clips.

Ohhh, you’re working at 24fps, the Automatic Duck option will only work if your Avid can capture from tape at 24fps, like if it is a Symphony Nitris.

    Rob,

This is a stupid idea. First of all, they won’t be able to work directly with your QT files. These files will have to be ingested (imported) by Avid in order to be rewrapped. These new media files will not be linked by reel number or TC.

The only way to make this work is to move your project files via Automatic Duck (although check if your 24p project is supported) and then recapture from the tapes into Avid. Check with them about the Avid specs, as some systems have had problems with 720p, especially 24p projects. If no AD, then EDLs. I don’t believe there is any support for Varicam flagged frames if you did any under or overcranking.

Best option will be to online this in Avid as a 1080/23.98p project (upconverting from the tapes during capture). Then deliver in 720p from a 1080 master.

    Sincerely,
    Oliver

Better yet, since you started on FCP, do the finish on FCP.

Thanks Wes (& all who responded). The client finally saw the light and arranged for a Final Cut studio for the finishing. We think that will solve the issue!
