    Hi Eugene,
I think that there is only one way to know if is a codec issue or not: Compare it with the same clip processed in Uncompress.

How many times did he say his client didn’t SEE anything wrong? Some of you answered a question that was never asked.

    You are right Trevor.
So Eugene, if what your client doesn’t like is the name of the codec, just transcode the movie to 10b Unc.
Will have nothing to complain about.

The client hasn’t said there was anything wrong with the way the footage looks. He just stated “my experience with ProRes is still new and I am extremely averse to working in that format unless I have seen concrete evidence and know with certainty that there is absolutely no qualitative difference between uncompressed HD and the ProRes codec.” So I’m doing some research to show him that there is little difference in the two codecs.

I could have recompressed the file but I’m just trying to be honest. If I have to redo the job so be it but I want the client to understand the technology and why I choose to use the codec.

In the past I always worked in 10-bit Uncompressed and then layed the trailers off to HDCAM for film out which is less quality than ProRes.

    Thanks.

    Hi Eugene,
Codec-snobbism, or your client is questioning your skills and professionalism.
Play both clips (10b and Prores) and make him tell which one is the 10b and which one the Prores.

    Eugene,

It’s clear that you aren’t charging this client enough. From now on you should simply charge him by the pixel rather than the hour or day.

“simply charge him by the pixel”

Now THAT is the best business advice I have seen this year.
That should go in the Cow business forum as a New Year’s resolution.
Much better than the old “charge per finished minute” paradigm…

Thank you! Thank you! Glad you appreciated that one…

And as you and I know, despite saying it as a joke, there is actually substance behind that remark.

    David,

Does an uncompressed pixel go for the same rate as a ProRes pixel?
