I’m sure someone has already mentioned this here, but here’s a smart (AKA – dumb) move on Apple’s part. Has anyone here tried to re-install FCP 7, after FCP X has been installed? That’s the catch….you can’t. Because FCP is called just that, “FCP”, the application won’t install FCP 7 onto your machine if you have FCP X there, because they’re called the same thing. That’s why all your Pro Apps were thrown into a new folder. What a mess Apple’s created.

Yes you can. All you have to do is put FCPX, Compressor 4, and Motion 5 in a folder called “Final Cut Pro X” together and you can install FCS3 just fine in their normal locations. The new versions run fine in a folder. Not a big deal.

You may have to move them out of the folder if you want to do a software update, but other than that it’s not really problematic.

I believe Apple kept the names the same because both versions use the some of the same system files frameworks…the links would get broken if they changed the names.

    Hey John,

I thought about that, but the big question is, are we sure that the only thing that moved when installing FCP X, was the application packages? For all we know, there could have been other files that were moved in the process. Something important to keep in mind when updating to Lion. Install FCS3 before installing FCP X.

Mac applications don’t have that kind of ‘hook’ like you’d get in a pc.

The bottom paragraph basically tells you to do what I said.

I have it set up that way, and everything seems for run fine. I have not been able to test extensively, so there might be some less common function thats broken, but it seems to work fine.
