I have some (very) low-light wedding footage I shot in DV and I want to bring out as much detail as possible from the image without making the video noise too annoying. After some tweaking, I settled on adjusting the gamma to 7 and adding a 1 pixel gaussian blur to smooth out the added video noise but not blur the faces too much.

    My questions:
Is there any better way to do this or anything additional I can do?
Is gaussian blur substantially better than fast blur for this purpose?
And what does Fast Blur’s edge doubling option do?

Have you tried the Highlights/Shadows filter?

    Was that added in 1.5?

I have 1.0 and nothing comes up when I search for either a highlight or shadow filter.

I’m not sure about 1.0 but in 1.5 its under Video Effects > Adjust > Shadow/Highlight
