Cleanest way to convert Varicam project to 1080p
I’m about to online a feature shot on the Varicam in 720/24. We are mastering to D5 in 1080/24p. I’d like to capture via a Kona card into Final Cut Pro. What is the cleanest way to upconvert the picture? I have access to all original source footage.
Some thoughts on to how do to this:
Use an AJ-HD1800, recapture all footage via 1080p unconvert from the VTR?
Rent a 1200 or 1400 and go through a Teranex box? (worried about field sync if doing this)
Use the hardware conversion on a Kona 3?
After Effects?

If I were you, I’d use the 1200 or 1400 and put it in 23/24 mode. This will cross convert your 720p24 flagged footage to 1080psf23.98. Capture in 1080psf23.98 10 bit UNcompressed or ProResHQ through the Kona. Output to D5. The 1200 or 1400 deck will cross convert your footage, remove the necessary flags and re-tc your captured footage to base 24.

I thought the 1200 and 1400 only converted a 720/24 source to 1080/60i, and in order to get 1080psf23.98 I had to use an 1800 (or maybe a 1700 would work).

Nope. If you put the deck in 23/24 mode (and out of 59/60 mode) you will get 1080psf23.98. I just did it today.
