I’m putting the finishing touches to a program that uses a lot of archive, most of the sources through the series have been really good, but in the last programme a lot of the clips were only possible to source off DVD and VHS even. These clips have some really horrible compression artefacts, and this problem is being compounded even more by the decision to “arc” the archive for this series (I prefer to keep the original 4:3 or occasionally 1:1 format myself, but it’s not always up to me!).

To give you an idea of what I’m up against:

I’ve done a lot of archive shows, and this is the worst by far that I’ve come across. So, does anyone have any ideas, tips, know any life saving software?

I’m currently going to give Digital Film Tools Composite Suite Pro a try out, but would like to know of any alternatives. I’ll post the results here too, because I’m sure I’m not the only person who’ll ever have this problem!

    Hi Michael,
With VHS the only thing you can try is a good capturing.
A player with Pro Amp and TBC to process the signal and a good capture card. And a good capture codec.
With the DVD stuff, transcoding to a good codec. 8b Uncompress would be the ideal.
After you may try something like the MagicBullet “Deartifacter” or the Nattress “Chroma Smooth/Sharpening”.
I would try as well the Innobits “Video Purifier”.
