I inquired with these Citidisk guys about their forthcoming direct-to-disk recorder for the HVX200. It looks as if they may have their product out before the Firestore one comes out at the end of March. Does anyone out there have experience with the reliability of these guys products?

    Here is their reply:

    HI,
We are indeed working on the CitiDISK HD which is going to be announced
    in
    DVExpo early December.
I think the schedule is end of Jan. for release.

    Following up:

I just received this email from them:

    HI Harry,
Certainly we would like to demo the unit in DV Expo, but there are
    certain
    technical difficulties need to breakthrough.
Since the unit price is not decided yet, so, pre-order would not be
    possible till then.
Minimum hdd capacity for HD is 80G and up.
    We are California-based company.

    Regards,

    /Chris

That 2nd email reminds me of a piece of ‘vaporware’ called Imagek. It was supposed to be a ccd that you could drop into any 35mm still camera to turn it into a digital camera. They dragged a non working prototype around to trade shows for 2 or 3 years before it was finally made obsolete by cheaper digital still cams with higher resolution.

The moral of my story? I’ll believe it when they ship it!
