Cineform
Posted by Joshua Weiss on December 7, 2009 at 7:43 pmCan I just gripe for a second? I don’t expect anyone to help here but I don’t remember the last time I was so frustrated with a company. Cineform has a decent product. HOWEVER, I have yet to be able to get a hold of someone when calling numberous times. I have yet to have an easy experience getting an answer from them on anything. I finally decided to purchase a product and it is just as difficult to work with just getting their product installed as it is to get a easy communication from them.
I SERIOUSLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW A COMPANY SURVIVES WITH THIS BUSINESS APPROACH?!?!

I thought we’d addressed CineForm when we talked.
CineForm’s not answering their phone being what it is…what is the remaining issue?

December 8, 2009 at 4:53 pmFirst, let me say that I am sure Cineform is a great company. I have been irritated because it has not been an easy process to get information without a decent bit of homework. When I went to get information to figure out if their product was even what I needed, it was very hard. I searched around their website and could not find answers to my initial questions. I called numerous times and have since called a good handful of times and I don’t think I have ever actually spoken to a person. When I have a question or an issue, I don’t want to have to search through hundreds of forum posts each time – especially if I haven’t even purchased the product yet. I did get response through some emails. I guess it is just frustrating when you are already dealing with issues and have some sort of deadlines that you have to first search forums, then try email and wait for a response. Granted the response may be within a day but who wants to have to wait a day to have simple questions answered for problems fixed.
Second, Tim you have got to be one of the greatest guys out there. After our conversations and some troubleshooting I came to a few conclusions: Maybe my expectations were too high for my new system. If I am uneducated in this field, it really isn’t fair for me to expect you to educate me. I felt bad about taking your time to help me fix my problems. Cineform will work and my system will run easier with it. That being said, I don’t mind spending the money if it will help me.
I will work through it all and have gotten fairly far already as a result of your help. I certainly won’t be losing your contact info anytime soon.

December 8, 2009 at 9:21 pmWell…thanks for that, but what is going on with the system at this point?
Usually the issue is the AJA drivers. CineForm uses the OEM drivers, while the retail drivers come packaged with the card. Many people either try to run CineForm with the retail drivers, or worse…both installed.
Is anything working any better than when we last talked?

December 10, 2009 at 10:53 pmOnce I did some install/uninstall stuff, it seems to be working a little more smoothly. The Cineform codec is something that I do expect some kinks with until they get it up with CS4 which I am being told will happen this month. The only real big issue that I have is that my playback monitor will not output through the AJA box. However, the preview monitor will. Although while the preview monitor is playing back, the video seems unable to keep up with the audio. One of the reasons why I was willing to pull the plug with Cineform was because I could use this codec on my Newtek VT5 system which will then allow me to be editing in HD on two different systems with 3 additional in SD.
When I went back to start listing out the problems I had had prior to the cineform, I just flat out got confused. I had digitized and re digitized so many different things and had so many different “test” projects that I could not remember which ones did what. In addition, I am still trying to work through knowing the difference between a problem that is caused by me or my lack of knowledge vs one caused by hardware.

December 14, 2009 at 3:47 pmTim,
I did mean to tell you something that did help. My friend suggested that I switch my preview scratch disks to a different hard drive than my captured scratch disks. This actually smoothed some things out.
Just FYI
