  • CineAlta F-900 1080i compatible with Final Cut Pro?

Posted by Greg Verspohl on September 11, 2008 at 5:22 pm

Hello – I own the CineAlta F-900 and have a client who wants to use the Final Cut Pro platform to edit. (The client says he has the latest version.) If I shoot in 1080i (59.94i) and the client uses an HDcam deck with SDI port; will there be any problems?

Most of my previous clients use the Avid so it has never come up before on compatibility.

If yes to that will 24p (23.98PsF) work too?

Also when it is brought in should it be brought in at 8Bit 4:2:2 or 10 bit 4:2:2?

FCP has been doing HD long before Avid was doing HD. Thousands of shows have been cut with FCP and the F900 and it’s various iterations. We’ve done at least two dozen programs here alone. Since the HDCAM format only shoots 4:2:0 8 bit I can’t see any reason you would want to work at 10 bit; unless this is an FX heavy show with lots of precision color correction. Besides, the editor will probably be working in ProRes. In that case ProRes will capture at 8 or 10 bit depending on the source.

Thank you Michael. So what if a project is shoot in 24p (23.98) do certain models of HDCAM playdecks matter fo input to FCP?

The deck will make no difference what-so-ever. You will need a FCP set up with a Kona 3 card or something similar in order to take advantage of HD-SDI. Also, make sure your media drives are fast enough and with enough through-put to support HDCAM data rates.

a couple of corrections- HDCam format records as a single link 8bit YUV with a 3:1:1 color space, not the 4:2;0 color space that was quoted earlier.

“The deck will make no difference what-so-ever.”

Not true- some models of the HDCam “J” series players do NOT handle 23.98 playback, many Sony decks do not offer 23.98 with pulldown additions( to make 29.97) without optional boards.

As Jim has stated here, your FCP editor should have no issue with HDCam as long as they have the proper tools, just as any avid editor should.

[Michael Alberts] “Besides, the editor will probably be working in ProRes. In that case ProRes will capture at 8 or 10 bit depending on the source.”

Just to clarify this, Apple ProRes is a 10-bit codec. Therefore it will always create a 10 bit file, regardless of the source material. There is a very common misconception that ProRes is 8-bit and ProRes (HQ) is 10-bit. This is not true, they are both 10-bit, it’s simply the data rate that is different.
