Does anyone know of a way to put an effect (or even a way to record) a VO that will make the talent sound like the typical guy who sounds like hes been smoking cigars since he was a child?

Im doing a trailer for a thriller and want to record something like that. Also is there a way to make some low rumbling sounds that are really bassy? And is there a way to add a lot of bass to the VO besides the EQ?

I think this would make a great video tutorial for Creative Cow.

thanks for any advice thats out there.

    Hey, there —

As for that voice, it seems that the only way to really make that happen is to hire some guy who’s been smoking since he was four. There’s no substitute for the real gravel in a voice. You can make a voice boomier by placing the microphone very close to the narrator — mics tend to have the “proximity effect.” (Some mics even have bass roll-off to minimize the proximity effect.) If you use the proximity effect intentionally, it can make the voice bassy, but it’s not really going to sound rumbly.

As for the rumbling bass sounds, you might want to start with some orchestral bass drum sound and massage it in the editor. Extend it, pitch bend it, loop it, and turn it into an earthquake. I’m working on some similar sounds for a project now and have come up with a decent earthquake rumble from orchestral drums.

    Hope that’s helpful.
