I heard there is a good Chroma Key pluging available for Vegas 9E on vista 64bit os? Anyone know what it/they are? Looking for the best quality keying possible with Vegas.

Inexpensive ($80.00): NewBlue Video Essentials II
    Expensive ($1,000.00): Boris RED

Trial versions of both are available.

    Continuum Chroma Key by boris
Do you know if Continuum Chroma Key will work with vegas it is substantially cheaper than Boris Red? or even Boris FX? will it do Chroma Key?
I tried the new blue its good and easy but I nead a little finer control than that.

No it won’t. Continuum is a plug-in for After Effects, Premiere Pro or Final Cut.

Your best bet is to get Boris FX. It has the same chroma keyer that Boris RED does.

    Thanks John.
I keep forgetting about Boris FX and it’s a lot cheaper too.

Correct me if I’m wrong but Boris only gives you one frame to set your key to, and isn’t like a realtime pluggin. I do wish Vegas’s Chromakeyer had spill suppresion, but with the correct lighting and enough space between your subject and the green or blue screen to eliminate spill, it is usable. Hete’s an example of just that.

    Hope this helps, Danny Hays

Yes, this is a limitation of Vegas and not Boris. Usually you only need one frame to pull a good key. You can always load the clip on the Boris timeline if you need to have motion. This has the added advantage of being able to wrap the foreground with the background by using multiple tracks in Boris.

I do wish Vegas’s Chromakeyer had spill suppresion, but with the correct lighting and enough space between your subject and the green or blue screen to eliminate spill, it is usable.

You should take a look at NewBlue’s Chroma Keyer. It does an awesome job for the price and the spill suppression works really well.

I just had an edit where I needed to chroma key some transparent bottles and I immediately reached for the big guns and went into After Effects and use Keylight but it couldn’t handle it! Then I tried NewBlue FX Chroma Keyer and it keyed the transparent bottles perfectly right in Vegas. So in that instance, NewBlue was better than Keylight. Now… was there something in the 1000’s of dials in Keylight that I could have used to make the transparent bottles work? Maybe, but I don’t have time to tweak 1000 parameters. NewBlue FX simply handled it in 2 seconds of tweaking.

If you are still using the chroma keyer in Vegas and want more but don’t want to go for Boris FX or After Effects, I would seriously take a look at the newBlue FX Chroma Keyer in Video Essentials II. It really rocks!

I downloaded the NewBlue and it is much better than sony, but I have a glow or white edge around the subject that I dont seem to have the ability to get rid of with Newblue ( may be my lack of knowledge of Newblue)
I have not been able to get Boris FX to show up in my vegas. It seems to be asking where to put the plugins?
Boris support said to use this path,
    C:/ Program files> Sony> Vegas Pro> Video Plug-ins
I did, but still no boris FX in my sony?
    Any sugestions?

Is the white glow on the original video? Try selecting a color that is closer to the edges. You can also use Shrink to shrink the mask and get rid of the edges.

    Sir John
I never got an answer from Boris on why FX would not show up in my vegas 9, so I worked with the Newblue and the training on secondary color correction for keying the color ( not sure what its called but New Blue worked like a charm (had to shrink the matt) to get rid of white glow Thank U all for the help – New Blue owes you a commission!

While I like Boris’ software, their customer support leaves a lot to be desired. Did you try the Boris FX forum here at the Cow? They are pretty responsive.

lol… you’re welcome. I only recommend software that I personally use and believe in and I find the NewBlue plug-ins to be outstanding for the price.
