    Hi folks,

wanted to ask- I do corporate work and there’s been an increasing demand for more chroma key jobs. I use FCP 5.0 and the chroma key (using the SHIFT+ eye drop tool) with the 4:2:2 spill suppressor. The studio we use has great lighting and is shot by a great veteran videographer so the footage is pretty clean. However we still occasionally get riffles on the subject edges (loose hair lines), and other green artifacting arond bodies and furniture. I also use the edge thinning, softening, but still can’t get it perfect.

wanted to get some info or even a reality check on how to improve. Are there techniques anyone recommends? Are there effecetive cheap plugins (ultimatte is not an option right now). Am I being unrealisitic. Just would love a little input on different ways to get the best imaging possible. Thank you.

The chroma key built into FCP is not the best.

if you want chroma key that rocks use Shake

You could take a look at dvMatte Blast from DVGARAGE. It works with Motion. There’s a fully functional demo you can try, plus a couple of video’s on how it works. Follow the “Samples” link on the page.

I tried to do some keying in FCP before as well…not good. Ever since I touched Keylight in AE, I haven’t gone back. It’s very easy to learn/use, and somewhat comparable results to shake I think.
