I have an upcoming shoot where the client wants a talent shot head to toe in front of a green screen. They don\’t have the budget to shoot in a studio so we plan to shoot with paper. Since they want it head to toe and the largest sheet is 12×9, shooting HD the edges of the frame will be off the green background. As long as the person is fully in the background can we crop the edges in post and still be able to chroma key with no issues? It would seem to me this will work but I have never done green screen without the screen filling the frame.

    Thanks.

Yes you can crop or create a garbage matte.

Another tip is to mount your camera vertically (90º)

Steve gave you some great advice. I’ve done what you are going to do many time with no problems. Just keep an eye on their arms and make sure they stay in the green.

Pay extra attention to even lighting all the way up and down, to the feet and between the legs, so you’ll have less clean-up and masking work to do later. As the others have said, if you have a clear inch all th way around, that’s all you really need; masks take care of the rest.

I have always been curious to try the sideways camera trick, but have never yet had a situation where it was worth the extra hassle to set up.
