    Whenever I render anything, even if it’s just an avi or mov file that I added a small effect to, the results are never smooth. It either has a little choppyness, or it has some pauses during playback.

    I ahve tried all kinds of export and compression settings already. (Actually, I’ve tried them all!)

    I don’t think it’s a problem with the computer… I use Windows XP pro, P4, 2.56 CPU, 1GB RAM (%90 free) with plenty of free HD space.

    What could be wrong??

    It sounds as if you’re rendering at too high a data rate. This is probably a Compression Techniques question, but I’ll give it a shot.

    Use “make movie” and pick a codec in the Output Module.
    Did you try Quicktime Photo-JPEG at 89% quality?
    Did you try Quicktime Sorenson?
    What is the frame size of the movie?

    Ok, I never tried to lower the quality… I’m rendering something now with %89 like you said, but if that DOES work better… Why should I have to live with %89 quality? What would I need to do to get best, full quality? Stronger computer?

    One more thing that you asked… I’m using the default NTSC settings for my frome size.

    Ok, I did Quicktime Photo-JPEG at 89% quality and it came out perfect. But my question still stands, why can’t I benefit from %100 quality? (I moved this post to Compression forum like you said. )

    It’s always a trade-off. Hard drives can only read (spit out) so much data per second. They’re getting faster, but they still can’t spit out the MegaBytes per frame of an uncompressed video at the steady rate that we expect for smooth playback.

    That’s what compression is for. It uses software to reduce the amount of data that has to be played back, at a reduction of quality generally proportional to the amount of data reduction.

    Uncompressed = no data reduction = no compression = highest quality = worst playback.
    Highly compressed = great data reduction = lowest quality = best playback.

    Uncompressed and lossless (like ZIP files) is used when a file is not being played back, but transferred to another application or video editor. Then it gets compressed to a suitable data rate at the end of the workflow.
    Highly compressed stuff is used on the web, for example.

    Compression is an art and science, requiring a fair bit of time and experimentation to get the right balance for the right need.
