I will stay in HD but it is the codecs experience XDCAM versus Pro Res I am not 1005 clear about.

With ProRes, you will have to convert everything before hand. In my opinion, it’s worth it.

The non XDcam footage you will have to transcode/conform anyway, so that might as well go to ProRes, then if you don’t want to transcode all of the XDCam footage, you can simply edit in a ProRes timeline.

This way, all the transcoded footage will be ‘native’ and the XDCam will need a render in the ProRes timeline, but the render time isn’t that bad.

Don’t convert anything to XDCAM. And don’t try to edit other formats in an XDCAM sequence setting. Slow renders, crashing, poor system performance will ensue. Convert everything to ProRes, or everything ELSE but the XDCAM to ProRes and edit in a ProRes sequence.

Just to clarify this
SONY XDCAM transfer plugin converts everything into XDCAM EX 1080p30 and I do not see any option to convert in ProRez in one pass, right? So your recommendation would be for the better editing performance to convert XDCAM into Pro Res with Compessor, as a second pass?
Everything else in my “video pile” I will convert to Pro Res 422. Any recommendations on uprezing DV? Any opinion on Magic Bullet Instant HD 1.1?

Correct, you would have to use Compressor to go to ProRes (or you can use MXF4mac to edit from the native MXF files).

Just edit in a ProRes timeline (as opposed to XDCam). It will work much better than trying to editi XDCam.

Hardware with a Teranex, you can do this at the very end so that all your upconverting is the final material you need.

I still can’t understand why not edit in an xdcam sequence, but with the rendering set to prores. So any titles, graphics, transitions are pro res, and the footage stays original. It’s not going to make it look any better by up rezzing it. You might have to conform the xdcam in te end, but it seems one conform is better than uprezzing everything.

Because it’s not really ProRes except in the timeline. When you export it, it will conform everything back to XDCam and suck up major time and resources unnecessarily. It’s best to just use a ProRes timeline.
