  • Changing fonts of pasted Japanese text (hiragana/kanji/etc)

Posted by Brett Celinski on February 28, 2012 at 8:32 pm

I am working with many Japanese phrases in Illustrator and have downloaded a number of fonts from here: https://www.jref.com/japan/language/fonts.shtml

when I paste the characters into Illustrator I am not able to change the pasted text (just an example):

    メール

To these fonts. I can see the fonts fine in Illustrator in the font drop-down and English text will change to these fonts (displayed as Japanese characters but obviously it’s gibberish), but not Japanese copy and pasted text such as メール. I figure it is a clipboard/encoding issue but do not know what switch I have to press to make it work. I have looked at Composite fonts settings and a number of other tricks in the preferences but have not found the answer in Adobe’s help service. Any idea as to what option I haven’t clicked to let me change the font?

Actually I believe it might be a Windows 7 issue. I’ll upload a screen grab from WordPad to show you what I mean: https://i.imgur.com/gIz8r.png
As you can see, the selected text is japanese copied from elsewhere. The font selected, ‘citrusfruits’ is what I downloaded. The text next to メール is the font correctly displayed by typing random english letters. This problem persists in Illustrator/Photoshop and others.

Any help would be appreciated. Tricky stuff.
