    Situation
I need to make a map look as though it’s wrapped around a ball, then rotate it like the Earth.

    Problem
I do not have a flat image of the ball to wrap.

    Current Method
    I imported a ball into After Effects (CS4) as-is – round.

I put the map layer above the ball layer, and applied CC Sphere to the map, making it round so that I can spin it around the ball (the ball is not moving, and that’s okay).

    Your Help
Using HUE mode on the map shows the texture perfectly, but the map turns grey. I need to be able to change or control the color of the map while showing the texture of the ball.

Is there a way to do this using hue? I’ll also look into tint.

    ______

I think I solved my problem, but I’ll leave this for better suggestions and/or to aid anyone else

I right-clicked on the map layer (the layer in Hue mode)
I selected Layer Styles > Color Overlay from the menu
Under the Color Overlay tab, I selected a black color and right now I am exploring Blend Modes (Overlay seems to be working well)

Result: The map retains the texture of the ball and I am able to adjust the color to an extent — still trying various methods.

Depending on the structure of your project, you might be able to precomp your globe and then add any effects you like in the outer composition… you can colorize/tint it that way without it interfering with the texture from the transparency modes.
