I have a friend that has a 20GB/50min-long avi file that was captured (by an unknown program, at this point) using the CFHD codec. He has a MAC and cannot play this file or get it to play/burn successfully with FinalCut, Quicktime, iDVD, etc. He gets audio, but no video, just a blank white screen.

I’d like to help him if I can…

Is there a way in Vegas 6 to re-render his avi using a different codec, or is the whole codec thing done during capturing only??

There should be no problem loading it into Vegas and rendering to a different codec. You just need to make sure the FCP can read whatever codec you render to – you might want to do some small tests first.

In your opinion, what would be the ideal codec/format combo to use, considering this is HD footage?

You might want to go to the original m2t format. FCP should read that.

Since you would take a quality hit recompressing back to HDV MPEG-2, you might consider using Quicktime uncompressed or Quicktime Animation codec.
