Center?
In all my time with After Effects, I have still not found some sort of “center on stage” tool. Can anyone shed some light on centering objects on the stage in AE?

Select the layer you want to centre, hold down the Option key (Alt) and double click the Pan Behind Tool. This will centre the layer in the comp window.
