If I create a vector mask using the tool at the bottom of the layer panel such that the mask covers the entire layer, I am unable to select that mask with Path Selection Tool or the Direct Selection Tool.

Google search reveals many issues with this after an update a couple years ago.

Has this been resolved? It’s a royal PITA.

(Vector masks that cover only a part of a layer are still editable.)

I tried this out and believe the problem is that it doesn’t actually create a mask path when you press the add vector mask button. If it did, drawing another mask on it would make the second mask a boolean cut-out (intersecting shape) with the first one. It doesn’t, as the newly drawn “second” path becomes the ONLY path of the vector mask when completed. My conclusion is that there is actually no mask created when you press that button and consequently there is no path there to select or edit to begin with.
