CC (2014) Ram Usage: SLOW!
Hey all,
I’m working with a Mac Pro (2010), OS X 10.9, 20 gig of ram, and an additional GPU (Quadro 4000 with CUDA acceleration). The drives I tend to work off of are USB. 3.0 hooked into an added pci express slot.
I cut a lot of music videos (small projects with usually a low project size) and most of the footage I work with is offline (prores LT), unless shot with an Alexa (native Prores 422HQ or 4444)
Since the Premiere Pro CC (2014) update (BOTH 8.0 & 8.1), I’ve noticed that each time I work, premiere gets slower and slower as I cut. By the time I’m 30 minutes in, it’s laggy, unresponsive, and so is the rest of the computer. I kept Activity Monitor up while working once and noticed that the ram is getting sucked up by Premiere (as it should), but why then is it so slow?
I have premiere set up to use the maximum ammount of ram on my machine (17 gigs), but for some reason its still slow.
If I switch away from premiere for a quick second and then back, the ram tends to free up suddenly but only for a couple of minutes, but then soon back to its bad, slow habits.
Has anyone else noticed this problem with a slow Premiere Pro CC (2014)? And could anyone shed some light on what the hell it’s been doing lately?

Hi Nate,
Here’s a few things to try:
1 – the standard stuff – trash prefs and clean media cache. Cleaning media cache can open up hard drive space if nothing else.
2 – update your cuda on your Mac. It’s actually gone through several updates over the last few months. If you haven’t done it recently, give it a go.
2.5 – make sure your Quadro is in a fast PCI-e slot. Any reason why it’s not your primary graphics card?
3 – Make sure you’re on 10.9.5 which is the latest Mac OS
4 – Are you using a lot of Warp Stabilizer by chance? If you use a lot of it, it can increase project size, etc. You can correct this by rendering the clips out.

I’ve tried points 1-2.5 already. The Quadro isn’t my primary graphics card because it’s faster doing only the processing for Premiere. I currently have an ATI Raedon HD 5770 running everything else for the computer (displays and other processing besides premiere)
It’s a clean install of Adobe Premiere, and I dont use the Warp Stabilizer a lot, and so far not in the current project.
The only thing I haven’t tried is the 10.9.5 update. So I guess I’ll do that, but would prefer finishing the project (over the next couple of days) first, out of safety. So I’m okay waiting for it.
This is my home edit bay I’m talking about here, but this issue also comes up a lot where I work (a post production facility with much newer machines set up for online and offline editing to begin with).
I have a hunch its a Premiere problem, unless all of these machines are just set up wrong. But I’m gonna try the update first before I yell at Adobe.

Try the following:
- Sign out from Creative Cloud, restart Premiere Pro, then sign in
- Update any GPU drivers
- Trash preferences
- Ensure Adobe preference files are set to read/write
- Delete media cache
- Remove plug-ins
- If you have AMD GPUs, make sure CUDA is not installed
- Repair permissions
- In Sequence Settings > Video Previews, change the codec to one that matches your footage
- Disconnect any third party hardware
- Reboot
