“Cartoony’ plug in?
Posted by Brian Dugan on June 12, 2006 at 9:50 pmAnyone know where I can get a plug in that will enable me to
get a ‘cartoony’ effect (flatten out tones and bring darks to a black ‘outline’)
I guess along the lines of a high contrast or posterized look/Thanks

June 12, 2006 at 11:04 pmYou could try several of the Stylize effects (Effect/Stylize/…), in particular the Stylize/Find Edges. This is with After Effects Pro Edition, version 7.0. I think the regular edition has this one, too, though not sure.

June 12, 2006 at 11:09 pmThere’s no plugin that really achieves this effect, though you can get some decent stuff out of AE using the posterize effect, and a few others. But it varies from shot to shot.
However, if you want a real flat cartoon look, and you have 50 minutes to kill, theres a 3-part video tutorial using AE and Illustarator CS2 in achieving this effect here at the cow:
Again, this method isn’t perfect, but I’ve gotten some cool results with it, and I get a lot of email from people who use it…
