Cartoon Shading in New AE 7?

Dunno what DA told you exactly, but you could use the new timewarb tool to smooth your footage out and then massage it with other filters.

They might mean the new Smart Blur filter. It’s an integral part of my favorite Photoshop Action, “Lawtoon”. Bt Lawtoon (available at Adobe Studio Exchange) uses “Paint Daubs”, Accent Edges” and “Diffuse”, none of which are on AE.

The examples you give are a lot more manual work than just a filter on top of your video.

But I haven’t got a clue what Digital Anarchy was hinting at when they said that there was already ‘toon’ functionality in 7.0. Not that I know of anyway.

I’ve played with using Illustrator CS2’s LiveTrace feature to sort of do this. Only problem is the batch feature for Illustrator limits you to 10 files at a time. You have to hack the script file used by Bridge to up the max number.

Go to this folder: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\StartupScripts\LiveTrace_AI.jsx.
Open LiveTrace_AI.jsx.

Change the following two lines:

var MAX_BATCH_SIZE=10;
to
var MAX_BATCH_SIZE=99999;

scpt += ‘var doc = app.documents.add();\r’;
to
scpt += ‘var doc = app.documents.add(DocumentColorSpace.RGB);\r’;

(This second one defaults it to RGB, which you’d otherwise have to do from within Illustrator.)

Then you simply select your source images in Bridge and choose Tools > Illustrator > Live Trace.
