cartoon lemon explosions

Try a bulge distortion on the lemon just shortly before it bursts, and maybe continue expanding it during the shatter. Try putting it both above and below the shatter effect to have them interact differently.

Try using roughen edges which sort of dissolves things from their edges.

Also, you could try shattering the already shattering lemon (Add a second iteration of the same effect).

You could also do the effect and then render that out and then use the cartoonification process I describe in this (long) tutorial, so that it gets a cartoonish look:

In case you’re following this I have found that by duplicating the original explosion layer 4 times and offsetting each layer by one frame and making the dupes progressivly smaller i get a really nice looking explosion with “juice’ trials. If i then pre comp this and then roughen the edges the expolosion really does start to look friuty.
Will try this cartoon tutorial on it now and see if the desired look can be acheived…..
