cartoon lemon explosions
Posted by Criis Daw on March 20, 2006 at 8:19 pmHi,
Any of you wizzes got any advice as to how to make a cartoon style lemon (and other fruits) explode in AE.
I am thinking animating mask shapes but early efforts look very complicated and suggest that drawing every frame may indeed be quicker..???
The client has on site Flash dudes , would it be easier in flash with shape tweening ?
Anyway any advice as to how to appraoch this most heartily appreciatedThanks
Chris

March 21, 2006 at 1:26 pmCC= cycore effects. Comes with any non-educational version of AE 6? and 6.5. I think it comes will all versions of AE 7. Seperate installer on the CD/DVD.
Try using a glass shape setting for the shatter shape, and then as soon as the shatter starts, use the effects called Roughen edges and/or simple choker (with negative choke values) to soften or make the edges look more organic.
Also, consider looking a t a program like wondertouch particleIllusion or maybe Trapcode Particular if this is a paid job fo improving the look.

March 21, 2006 at 6:00 pmHi Chris,
I also recommend using shatter, with some other goodies to add zip to it. Check out this tutorial from Ayato’s sitehttps://www.ayatoweb.com/ae_tips_e/ae19_e.html
I started using this custom shatter map technique quite a few times, once I understood it – with a little effort, you can give the fruit a little bit of realistic thickness by choosing a color for the depth. I like the above mentioned idea about a little “juice”, as that’s part of the zip that really sells the animation.
Good Luck!

March 22, 2006 at 2:54 pmagain thanks…
the job has been postponed so i have a couple of weeks to sort these exploding cartoon lemons..Have been using the shater thing with custom shapes which is usefull, but does anyone know any tricks to get these custom shapes to change when the eplosion is in motion. I have tried using masks and animating their shape but to no avail.
If i can find a way to do this I will have it cracked (famous last words).Chin Chin
