Card Wipe Image Made up Many Images?

A few things:

If you want images that are each proportioned to 4×3 (such as a bunch of 640×480 images) to fit into a 4×3 (proportioned) composition, you need an equal number of images on each side of the matrix: 3×3 (9), 4×4 (16) and so on. 4×3 images in a matrix of 4 images by 3 images makes 16×9, not 4×3 (12×9). The whole thing ends up wider than 4×3.

If you want images to fit into a 4×3 matrix (12, or 8×6 or 12×9) within a 4×3 frame, then the images need to be square.

720×486, in square pixels, is not 4×3. If your images were created in Photoshop as square-pixel images, they need to be 720×540 or 648×486, for example.

If you knew all that, then:
1. Are your images 720×486 square pixels or non-square?
2. Is your card wipe layer 720×486 square or non-square?
3. Is your final comp 720×486 square or non-square?

Thanks for the detailed response, Steve. Since I am building this for use on my Avid DS for broadcast…the final comp is 720 x 486 nonsquare. The client hasnt provided the stills to me yet….so I would guess they are square Photoshop photos.
I thought it wise to play around with the effect before executing it in the edit bay with the client present. The concepts you shared should help me in achieving the look I want…but there still are some unknowns until I see the photos. I appreciate your help.

Hmm … here’s what I’d do, assuming that your matrix should fill the Avid frame:

If the photos have to be 4×3, then select 100 photos out of the 108. If the client can’t get 100 photos together, make it 81 photos.
Then I’d drop the images into a 720×540 sq. pixel comp, and arrange them into a matrix. I could use 648×486, but the clcs are easier with 540.
Then I’d drag that comp into a proper D1 comp, scale it down a bit to fit, and apply card wipe.

If the matrix has to be 9×12, then the photos have to be square, as I wrote before.
