    Hello,

    I am trying to capture various formats (mini Dv, DVD, Digibeta) to Final Cut pro through an AJA Io system. I am using a G5 and have plenty of free space on my scratch drive. All was working perfectly well until this week. When ever I try and capture it will work for 20 seconds then an error message will pop up saying the capture failed due to dropped frames. I

    What kind of scratch disk do you have and at what codec are you capturing to?

    because if you are trying to work on an internal single drive in your G5, you ain’t gonna do much of anything other than DV25 – and that is if you have a second internal drive to capture on. You need a big mama drive array to do this work – anything from an external FW800, to products from Cal Digit, Ciprico, Medea, and others. You must specify what resolution you are working at, for me to give you more details as well – yes, it does matter.

    Hello,

    I have 2 extra internal drives one entirly devoted to capturing.

    My set up setting are:

    Sequence Preset: DV PAL 48 Khz
    Capture Preset AJA io: Composite 8-bit PAL to DV 48 Khz
    Device Control Preset: AJA io RS-422 PAL
    Platback output video – PAL – Component YPbPr SMPTE N10 – 8 – bit 422 (720 x 576)

    Im working at 720 x 576

    it will capture for 20 seconds then the error will come up ‘Dropped frames were detected during the last capture attempt’

    When was the last time you wiped that second internal drive? A little fragmentation in a single drive setup goes a long way towards dropped frames on capture.

    download AJA Kona System Test (even though you have the I/O), and report back the read and write times. You should be getting at least 60mb/sec on a properly working internal single SATA drive. If you are not, there is an issue with your drive. It looks like you are only working at DV resolution, so a single internal SATA will work for this (but not for higher resoltuions). It’s easy to run AJA Kona System Test, and is critical for testing out your drive speeds, to see if they can work for you.

    This is the result from the test…It doesn’t make much sense to me. I have not changed anything with in my scratch and video drives and the system set up has been working fine for nearly 2 years. I will try and de-frag my drive when I can work out how…I’m sure a setting has been changed in the capture options, would anything in that menu have a dramatic impact on the capture process?

    That’s awesome, but all you really need to report is the overall read and write in the top right corner of the Kona System Test.

    Write : 35.8 – 39.5 MB/s
    Read : 36.1 – 39.7 MB/s

    The range is relative to different file sizes..but it seems to be quite low…

    yes – this is WAY TOO LOW – a normal SATA drive will do above 60mb/sec. Simply test your boot drive – you will see, even though it is full, you will probably get over 55mb/sec. This is the reason you are getting dropped frames. I urge you to use the Apple Disk Utility to ERASE this drive (make it OS-X Extended, NOT Journaled), and try this test again. If you still get 30mb/sec, something is wrong with your second internal drive.

    So I erased my scratch drive and ran the AJA Kona system test.

    Results:

    Write: 58.5 MB/s
    Read: 57.4 MB/s

    So both have been increased but I still get the same error message when I try and capture…

    Any ideas?
