  • Capturing Video live (in real time) straight into FCP

    Hello to all,

I have a project in the mix for a local church in my area. They are just now getting into wanting to shoot and edit their sermons, and make DVDs and online video. They have asked me to help them out this Sunday to show them how to shoot the sermon and the basics of editing. But, once they know the basics, I will shoot for them and let them edit their sermon.

My question then is…… Is there a way to capture live/streaming/real time video straight from a Panasonic HVX200 into FCP. Again, they have no idea how this works, and I have agreed to shoot on Sundays, and let them edit. But, of course they don’t have a deck or other camera, so how do they capture? I of course have told them that I can’t/won’t use my camera as a deck. So what they asked, was can we go straight into the mac from the camera through firewire?

Is this possible? If so, what would I/they need? I know that I could use my camera in P2 mode and get 63 min or so on my 16gig card, but I still would have to stay around while it transfers. I would love to bypass this if possible. Our dream situation would be I…..

-Set up the gear (camera to mac through firewire)

-Record the sermon (while capturing in Final Cut)

-Pop out the tape and give it to whomever

-Pack up the gear and go home

That’s it. Again, is this possible??

    Thanks for your help! 🙂

It is possible to capture a live feed from a camera straight into FCP via FireWire. I don’t see any reason why the HVX200 wouldn’t be able to do this, but you may not be able to go HD.

After hooking up your camera to the computer, start FCP and go to the Capture dialog. In the Capture Settings tab, change Device Control to Non-Controllable Device. Then just use the Capture Now feature to capture the live feed from the camera. You might want to double check your user prefs to make sure there is not a limit set on capture now, otherwise FCP will stop the capture after a set amount of time.

Most deities can’t be bothered with mean time to failure specifications or boobies who trip over cables. Be sure you are also rolling tape.

    You Don’t need even FC.
Just plug the FW to the Mac and in QT “Open a new Video Recorder”.

    Hi all,

I will be doing the same thing as mentioned but using the canon XH-A1, I just want to be clear that it will simultaneously be recording to tape AND through QT.

    Thanks,

    Willy

Hi, on my macbook pro, with a Canon Zr 800 firewired in, import fcp shows two cameras…the ‘facetime’ one in the macbook and the canon. Select facetime, import (capture) streams seamlessly. Clip is in main window when i close import screen. Select zr800 and all seems normL except there is no clip waiting when i close the import screen. Any clues? Thanks,

    Dave
