  • Capturing video from Sony HDR-FX1 to FCP

Posted by Arturo Celleri on December 18, 2008 at 11:42 pm

I am wondering if the iLink Firewire Port on my Sony HDR-FX1 camcorder is working. I have my camcorder set as follows: VCR mode, VCR(HDV/DV) Auto, i.Link Conv. (OFF), A/V – DV OUT OFF, and I am playing a DV tape.

My FCPro settings are as follows.
Device Control Preset: Firewire NTSC Basic
    Capture Preset: DV NTSC 48kHz
    Sequence Preset: DV NTSC 48kHz

    Video Playback: None
    Audio Playback: Default

I have tested my firewire port on my: Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5, 2.5 GB DDR SDRAM
with an external hard drive using firewire and it works fine.

Can anyone help me determine if I have to send my camera to repair or am I missing some software setting?

    Many Thanks,

    Arturo Celleri

    1. Is it possible to test another camera with your Mac?

    2. Have you trashed your preferences? Log and Capture is very susceptible to corrupt prefs.

    3. Do you have any other devices connected to the same firewire bus while this is going on?

I don’t have anything else connected to the firewire ports on my Mac and I don’t have another camera to test it with.

Would you help me trash my preferences. I do not know how to do this?

    Thanks again,
    Arturo

Does the tape play in the camera?

Also your FCP capture settings are SD settings and your camera playback settings are to not downconvert HDV. I am betting that your tape was shot in HDV, and your camera is sending out a HDV signal but your computer is looking for a DV signal.

Think of it like this your camera is speaking german but you have told your computer to listening for Spanish.

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

Set VCR(HDV/DV) to DV and set A/V – DV Out to On. Also, try using the FireWire NTSC device control preset (not FireWire NTSC Basic).
