  • Capturing via USB on G5

I’ve searched this issue and didn’t come up w/ much so I apologize for what is probably a basic ?

I have VHS/DVD’s that I wish to capture and my G5 just has Firewire.
I bought a Dazzle usb connector that has S-video/stereo inputs, which worked fine on my Dell laptop but for some reason I can’t get the G5 to recognize it in FCP 5.

Any thoughts as to how I can get FCP to notice the video source connected via this way? Or any other recommendation to capture such footage with my G5?

    Thanks

The only way to capture into a GS via FCP without a capture card is via firewire. Firewire converters only.

Dazzle is notorious for not being Mac compatible…even the firewire products. While they might work with iMovie, they tend not to work with FCP.

Canopus ADVC 110 or 300 are better choices.

All G5s have USB ports. Your keyboard is plugged into one (unless you have a bluetooth keyboard, of course).

OTOH, USB is not a particularly good way to capture video. The bandwidth of USB 1.1 is very low, & even USB 2 isn’t really a good way to capture video.

You should get a firewire device for capture. There are many on the market. If you go to apple.com & search on the FCP support pages you’ll find a pdf of approved capture devices.
