Capturing to “the same” drive.
Assuming 500GB of raw footage from various solid state cameras (HVX, EX1, Red etc) on a 2TB G-tech drive.
Is it better to capture all this footage onto a DIFFERENT drive or will it pose any problems capturing back to itself? This would be via FW800.
Generally looking for the speediest, least likely to cause problems solution. Or doesn’t it matter?

Yes, because all of the RAW footage is basically your TAPE master. This stuff you put on a shelf and archive. After you import them to a separate MEDIA drive.

Thank you. That’s definitely the way to have it organized. But as far as speed of transfer or reliability etc., is there an advantage to capturing to a different drive over back to the same drive?

ABSOLUTELY. Instead of alternately reading and writing to one drive, if you go from one drive to another the process will be MUCH faster.
