capturing to FCP 24 fps from Panasonic AG-DVX100
I’m editing a short documentary shot in 24 fps Normal off the AG-DVX100. What is my best bet in capturing this material to FCP? Ultimately, I’m burning this to DVD and also submitting it to festivals – I want to achieve a “film look” for the movie, if not enhance the picture quality, when it is finally exported to DVD format.
Also, I want to present his film in widescreen although it was shot in a 3:2 ratio.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Capture the movie as regular 29.97 footage, because that’s what it is actually with 24fps spread out over 30 using a 2:3:2:3 pulldown pattern. If you change the aspect ratio to 16:9 from the 4:3 you shot, you’ll lose a lot of quality.. but if you don’t care… you don’t care. Might actually be better off just letterboxing it. At least you’ll not have to expand it to become true 16:9.
Put the 4:3 material in a 16:9 sequence, then enlarge it until it fills the screen… this expansion is where you lose the quality.
If the movie is shorter than 60 minutes, there’s really little gained by removing the pulldown, unless you’re after a film print. You’ll not see any difference at all in the look of 24fps… But you can do this if you want in Cinema Tools. Read the manual found in the Help menu of CT to find out how, it’s pretty easy. But I don’t think it will look any different. When 24fps video is screened, the pulldown is added back by DVD players, and if from tape, it HAS to be 29.97 NTSC to be played back as such.
