    Hey all,

I’m shooting with a canon xh-a1 and I don’t want to put time on the heads to capture. I have heard that tape decks are a good choice for something that will last a long time. I have 3 questions.

    1. I don’t know anything about tape decks, can you also stripe with them?

    2. Is there any brand or model that works best with what I shoot with?

    3. I’m looking at a sony hvr-m25u, as a possible option, would I need to capture any different than I do with a canon product because it’s a sony?

Thanks in advance for your help,
    K.L.

If you are shooting HDV with that Canon (not SD) and shooting in either 24f or 30f mode… because of Canon’s proprietaray way of shooting progressive footage you are somewhat limited on decks that will work.

For the longest time, there were no decks that would play the footage… you had to use a Canon camera… hence the popularity of the cheap Canon HV20 camcorders. Many people (including us) bought them just to use as decks.

Finally, a couple of decks did come out that will support the Canon footage. The Sony M35 was the first, and I believe it’s probably the most popular. I think there are a couple of others now, but I’m not sure what they are or whether the M25-U is one of them. That would be something you’d definitely want to check on and confirm before investing in a deck.

Remember… that’s ONLY if you shoot HDV and ONLY if you shoot 24f or 30f. If you shoot HDV at 60i, any HDV deck will work. And if you shoot standard def, most any DV or HDV deck will work no matter if you shoot 24f, 30f, or 60i.

[Todd Terry] “but I’m not sure what they are or whether the M25-U is one of them.”
The Sony M35U, M25AU, M15AU will playback native progressive scan, like Todd said the HV20/30/40 will also playback, the HV40 will also record the format, they are a cheaper alternative to the Sony Decks.
