capturing JVC Decks to FCP
I recently purchased 2 JVC decks model # SR-MV50 and SR-DVM700. They are both listed as professional decks. When I try to capture in FCP it initially sees it but when I go to record or “capture now” it tells me there is no video signal.
Apple says they are not on the list of approved decks yet and I have not found any drivers on JVC’s website. Does anyone have any suggestions or a digital work around. I am able to capture via S-video through a Data-Video converter but I hate to have a fairly expensive deck and still have to do it that way.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The JVC SR-MV50US is a DVD-R & S-VHS/VHS Dual Deck Recorder and Player.
And the JVC SR-DVM700 is a miniDV and DVD recorder-player.
The first one (MV50) simply will not be compatible as a capture device for FCP. The output of this unit does not go out the FW. The FW is an INPUT only.
The second unit (DVM700) is a proud member of the JVC family of unreliable and incompatible miniDV combo decks.
These units simply will not consistently work well with FCP.
Here’s a workaround that won’t cost much money.
I have had GREAT luck buying used miniDV “home video” camcorders and using them as spare “decks” and A-to-D-to-A video/audio converter “boxes”. I have bought MANY of these little gems at local Pawn Shops for UNDER $175 each (some for $99). The transfer quality in and out matches a deck, and the video/audio output (they all have S-Video outs) monitors great!
AND… If you choose a SONY or PANASONIC camcorder (except for the earliest-built versions of the Sony VX1000), those two brands will ALSO playback perfectly any DVCAM-recorded mini DV tapes as well as DV SP and DV LP (yikes!). -
thanks for the info. Sounds like I should have saved the money and bought a DVD recorder and a few second hand mini DV cameras.
I thought the DVM700 would be a decent deck for a reasonable price.Michael Edwards
