capturing issues
hello,
I am having issues while capturing to final cut in Pal.
When I open the Log and Capture window and view the footage, both the video and audio stutter. sometimes the footage runs fine for a few seconds but then the video gets pixelated (huge distorting squares) and the audio starts stuttering.
I tried 4 different miniDv tapes and the same thing keeps happening.
I also tried trashing the final cut preferences and disabling “abort capture if frames are dropped”.when i try capturing i receive a “time code break” error but there are no time code breaks on the tape.
does anyone have any idea why this is happening and/or how to fix it?
i have been using Final Cut 5 on my MacBook Pro for capturing and editing for over a year and never had any trouble before.
my system has 2GB ram, 60gb free HD space, OS X 10.4.11, final cut 5.
the footage was shot on Panasonic DVX100 and i am using a SONY DVCAM deck.

Have you tried cleaning the tape heads?

I haven’t tried cleaning the tapes but they are brand new, i bought them last week and used them only to film this footage.
Whats the best way to clean them?
Do you think its possible that the camera head was dirty and damaged the four tapes i used?
unfortunately i don’t have the camera with me, it was a rental.Thanks,

No, not the tapes. The deck. Clean the deck.

Test out on a different deck.

i borrowed the deck from a friend and i don’t have another one accessible. however, i know that he used it earlier today and didn’t have any problems with it.
i also noticed that the video and audio interruptions occur at exactly the same place each time i play the tape, this probably means that there is something wrong with the tapes, right? -

Could be…
Sony and Panasonic use different lubrication for their tapes, it’d be worth it to getting a head cleaning tape, run it and see if it clears up your problem. If not, you should track down another deck or camera and check it there.

Just to double-check, you did shoot them Pal, correct? You’re not trying to digitize NTSC tapes as Pal? I’ve never tried it and don’t have a mini-dv deck hooked up right now to try it out on, but I would assume that it would look distorted and jumpy if you had shot them NTSC and were trying to capture wrong. Humor me and try an NTSC setup.
