  • Capturing HDV in FCP??

Posted by Christopher Griffin on September 18, 2009 at 2:15 pm

    Greeting CCow Community!

Im currently working on my first HDV project. Ive done countless DV projects in the past. I have some footage that was shot in HDV720p and I am using a Sony HVR FX1 to capture. I have my settings on Apple Intermediate Codec. When I open the capture window, after naming the tape and press capture, FCP does recognize the camera and starts to cue the tape, however it does not actually capture. It just plays the tapes as if it is still cueing it. Am I missing something?

Yes, you are missing something, you should capture and edit in ProRes.

I changed the settings to the ones specified on that page, and then got this message : “Capture was aborted due to lack of incoming data from device. Check your connections and that the deck is playing.”

FC was controlling the camera, video was playing but nothing was captured.

    Hi Christopher,

I don’t own an FX1, but its my understanding that it doesn’t shoot 720p, and won’t play it back for capture. You may have to get one that can. Was this shot on a JVC?

There may be more info online:

I am not sure what it was shot on. I received the tapes from a client to edit. As I stated before, the camera is playing the footage, but FC is not capturing it.

[christopher Griffin] “I am not sure what it was shot on. I received the tapes from a client to edit. As I stated before, the camera is playing the footage, but FC is not capturing it.”

Then the camera is probably feeding a DV signal rather than the HDV signal that FCP is expecting. You would have to check your menu settings to ensure you’re feeding HDV and not a downconverted signal to FCP.

Or, as others have said, you cannot play 720p via that camera properly and even though FCP is controlling the camera, it won’t play the proper signal down the firewire pipe.

The down convert is off, so that must be the case… Nuts! I have access to a Panasonic P2, does anyone know if that will do the trick?

Did that fix the problem? I’m new to this forum (just signed up today) and I’m having the same issue. I’m shooting with a Sony HDR- FX7 in 1080i and FInal Cut is not showing any video there?

Panasonic P2 cameras don’t shoot HDV, they shoot DVCProHD.

720p in a Sony? I thought Sony was 1080i. Most likely it’s a JVC recording, and if it is, Sony deck’s/camera’s won’t play back JVC 720P.
Check your FCP capture settings to make sure they match your source, and check to see what gear your source footage came from.

When I play the tape in the Sony HVR FX1, the viewscreen tells me that it is HDV720p. FCP recognizes and can control the deck, but just can not capture.

This is frustrating me to no end! Is there a way around this? Possibly dubbing to DV?
