September 18, 2009 at 6:39 pmMake sure in ‘Audio Video settings’ you have the capture preset as HDV, and your device control HDV Firewire.
On your device make sure it is set to output HDV, if it has selectable output options.
Make sure your device is turned on, and connected and reboot your system.
FCP should recognize you device.
If this doesn’t work troubleshoot your firewire cable/ports with known good components.
In camera forums, I have seen posts stating some cameras can preview (in the VF) other format tapes, but would not output the signal.
It really helps to have the camera the footage is shot with, perhaps the client can get it for an afternoon? -

September 18, 2009 at 7:50 pmWith my Canon A! the playback settings have to be set to HDV, the default is Auto. You have to set this before you set the firewire.
Have as good a day as you can.

September 19, 2009 at 10:29 amSome sonys can playback 720p. The only way you can capture it with a Sony deck is to use a capture card Like the Intesity Pro and use the component cables.
The easiest way would be to hire a jvc deck or cam and capture it that way. You will most likely run into the jvc-fcp capture issues. Best to use dvhscap or you will get breaks in your footage.

September 19, 2009 at 11:55 amThanks all for the help. I solved my problem.
I simply dubbed the HDV footage to a DV camera using RCA cables. I know Im going to have a loss of quality, but I didnt have access to a JVC camera or deck. My client said next time he has a project he is just going to have me shoot it ; )
