  • Capturing HDV from HV20 without a tape in fcp 6?

Posted by Jayson Rahmlow on July 14, 2007 at 7:42 am

I’m trying to capture video (hdv) from my HV20 via firewire to my macbook pro through FCP 6 without having a tape in the camera. When I attempt to capture the video, FCP opens the capture window, shows the HV20’s video stream, then “looks for media” and refuses to record any clips. I tell the screen “it’s right there just capture it!” But to no avail. Am I attempting the impossible?

Some websites suggested I try to capture using the “non controllable device” capture setting, but this didn’t work for me.

    any suggestions?

    thanks,

Here’s my best guess: I don’t think that this can be done with HDV cameras… reason is the stream that has to start with an i frame… only 1 in 15 frames would be that, so if you don’t hit that frame exactly, it’s not going to capture the video. Further, I’m not sure timecode is being sent out that FW port…

If you had a camera that puts out uncompressed HD like the Canon higher end cameras do, you could capture that stream live because it’s an all i frame format… Also, if you had a Kona LH series card or Io HD, you could also capture from your analog outputs from your current camera. It too would be sending an all i frame stream to your Mac.

    “This doesn’t work for me.”

Why does this this not work for you? What happens when you do that? What settings are you using on the camera? What settings are you using in FCP?

    All the best,

I works fine for me. While ours is a European model, I can’t see a reason why it shouldn’t work for you.

Apart from that, you can get awesome quality by capturing live from the HDMI connector with Blackmagic’s Infinity card from that camera.

I’ve tried a couple different settings. Neither let me capture the hdv video stream.

    Camera settings

    HDV 24p connected via firewire.

    FCP settings

    1. capture preset – HDV
device control preset – non controllable device

result – I try to open the capture window and FCP says – to capture hdv both presets must be set to HDV. Otherwise to capture other format both presets must not be set to HDV.

    2. capture preset – HDV apple intermediate codec
device control preset – non controllable device

result – I try to open the capture the window but FCP says “unable to detect tape”

What set up are you using that’s working for you?

    Thanks,
