  • Capturing from a Digital Hi8 (DCR-TRV480E) to FCP? Can’t capture more than 4 seconds

    Hello,

I’m getting dropped frames whenever I attempt to capture video from my video camera, using Final Cut Pro on my MacBook Pro.

I’m capturing from a Hi8 Digital Camera (DCR-TRV480E PAL. I’ve already gone into the Capture settings and changed my Device control to: Non-Controllable Device. After that I was seeing the video in the capture tool, but when I tried to ‘Capture Now’, it wouldn’t work because of the dropped frames.

So then I went into my User Preferences under the General tab, and clicked on the ‘Abort Capture on Dropped Frames’ and then the capture worked, but will only captures 4 seconds of footage before it stops the capture and gives me this message: Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved.

But the clips are 4 seconds at most! Help? Is it the tape? Or is there something I’m missing? At this point I’m desperate. Need this edit finished in less than a week.

    Thanks!!

    EJ

I had this exact same problem a few years ago. I trouble shot forever but with no luck. What I ended up having to do is take the video signal out of the Hi8 camera (with RCA cables or S-video if it has it) and ran it into either a minidv camera or a mini dv deck. As I played through the Hi8 tape, I recorded on the minidv deck, thus dubbing the tape (obviously with a little bit of quality loss because of the signal flow). But from there, I was able to digitize the dubbed minidv tape without a problem.
