Capturing DV footage – use DV compression ?
Client provided me with a MiniDV tape with some footage.
I need to do Color Corrections on it (Using AE)I was wondering (for general knowledge as well) is there any differnce
if I capture the footage using 8bit, 10bit or DV capture presets ?I did them all, compared frames but couldn’t find any noticable differences.
(Maybe because the original footage looks like cat litter). Hmmmmm.Are there specific regions I should pay attention to ? Skys ? Grads ? Reds ?

Let me add that usually I capture raw footage using DV prests,
But this is a 3minute that has some treatment to it and
I didn’t want to get any DV artefacts.cheers

You gain nothing my capturing DV at 8-bit or 10-bit resolution, other than increase ability to green screen and the fact that any graphics you add to the project will look better. In fact, if you capture DV at 8-bit or 10-bit you are slightly COMPRESSING the image. The only true lossless way of capturing DV is via firewire using the DV/NTSC (or PAL) presets. Capturing 8 or 10-bit for color correction won’t improve things, I’m afraid.
DV is, by nature, compressed 5:1 in the camera. If the artifact is on the tape, it will be on the captured footage. Garbage in, garbage out as the saying goes.
