I mostly work with static 2D images, yet occasionally I want to capture movie affect into static image, for example a motion trail of an object across the screen. Is it possible to accomplish such thing in AE? Is there any other piece of software that can easily do the trick? Some additional control over the effect would certainly be beneficial – like contribution of each frame to the total effect, control of blending mode in achieving the effect, filtering, color-correcting and distorting intermediate frames, etc. Please point me in right direction. I will appreciate any suggestion in this regard. Sasha.

The Echo effect does what you describe.
