Capturing advice
I’m using an MBP, 3 external 400/800 drives, Panasonic DVX 100B and FCS 2 to transfer for editing. Keep getting a tape error when trying to transfer. Using new tape. Last week I transferred using a feeble G5 with the firewire cable plugged into it. Saved to the externals so I could do the editing with the MBP. Took a long time but it worked. Only 2gb of ram in the G5. This week the G5 died. So I am trying to use the externals with the FW hooked into a single external from the camera. Tried each external in turn but with the same error. Tried daisy chaining drives 1 and 2 into the MBP. Same results.
I’ve run out of ideas which is why I’m here. Got to get this 90 minute piece done asap. Not much editing, just time consuming. Know nobody is watching today because of the game but am hoping someone out there will respond.

Couple of suggestions…Try capturing using non-controllable device in your capture settings. Then play it directly into the computer. Capture directly to the MBP and then move the file to the external drive.

Often this kind of error is associated with drive speed.
If you are daisy chaining devices you may find the whole chain slows to 400. This is not the case every time but it depends on drives/devices.
What happens if you just connect the 800 drive and the camera each to a seperate port on your MBP. Do you get the same issue ?

Thanks Neal, Don’t have a cable that converts 800 to 400. Using an iomega external that has both which is why I’m using that. Will try using the non-controllable aspect.

I’ve captured tons of tape with my ‘original’ G5 using the camera and a 400 cable. Tried the daisy chain and using just one drive with the same error. Only port on the MBP is an 800.

Ok well Neal’s suggestion of trying capture now would have been my next suggestion.
If that does not work a preferences trash is usually a good start when odd things starts happening.
Then its about eliminating stuff – have you got a dodgy drive cable ?, what if you try capturing a different tape that you know works ?
Capture to a totally different drive ?Narrow down the possible failure points. I guess you have probably tried most of those how annoying.

Thanks. The drive is a year old and, yes I just tried the uncontrollable part which also didn’t work. Preference trash is next…

Don’t ask me why or how but this time I got the G5 to boot, plugged the camera into it, ran the external into the G5, and, wa-la; video is now capturing (fingers crossed). Nothing I tried using the MBP seemed to work. Still would like to know if it’s a ‘here’ problem or a ‘there (apple)’ problem. Also wondering if there is some kind of patch.

On the G5 I run FCP2 with OS 10.5. On the MBP I have Leopard with the same FCP version, if that helps.
