  • Captured footage as DV…..what format do I render back out?

OK…here is my question. I just captured a bunch of old vhs tapes as DV files using the default DV-AVI settings in Windows movie maker. I am now wanting to take these HUGE files and edit them in After Effects…take out all the fuzz, etc.

My question is…how to I render out my final avi? As DV again?

    HELP!

haha…your swiss army knife line cracked me up! Oh and I know the large size on an uncompressed file believe me! HUUUGE!

So let me ask you this Dave….I just captured a VHS tape as a DV file. While editing and exporting back out as a DV file, I noticed the freshly rendered avi looks dull compared to the original sharp looking footage. And yes…I did say “After Effects” lol. Would Premiere Pro be a better tool to edit this footage in? I am thinking the “dull” look was from not setting the field to lower.

    Any thoughts?

Dave is absolutely right about the editing process. Premiere, if you have it, or any other non-linear editing program, is the tool for the job. However, in regards to the look of the footage, you may want to do some simple color correction. Try this: After you’ve laid out your footage on the time line, add the rgb curves effect. In the effect controls window, twirl down the controls for this effect, and try increasing the contrast by raising the master curve near the top just a little, and also lowering it just a little at the bottom. If I understand your issue with the look of the footage correctly, this may help a bit.
    Good Luck
