captured clip from Sony NXCAM will not open
I captured a clip from the NXCAM, which uses the AVCHD MPEG2 SD format. It shows in the capture scratch as a .mov, but will not import to fcp. I get: “File Error: 1 file recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown”.
Anyone have a clue as to how I can salvage the clip of a wedding ceremony? The other clips captured as Apple ProRes 422.

You need to use log and transfer

You need to update to 7.0.3, THEN use log and transfer. previous versions had issues with SD and that camera.

I did have 7.0.3 installed. I videoed using1080/60i FH recording format.

Then use Log and Transfer. You can’t use the files directly from the camera. They need to be converted.

oops, it looks like I updated to 7.0.3 the day after transferring this clip. And I formatted the card that contained the footage. Any way to salvage the footage from the unrecognized .mov file?

WHAT? Really? Why? Why do people NOT save a backup of their footage. Do you throw tapes into the garbage after you capture? Erase and then reuse them? Hard drives aren’t bullet proof. They can fail Mistakes can happen. ALWAYS backup your footage…always. Watch this tutorial for the proper way of doing things tapeless:

How? If the file is unrecognized, how can you salvage anything from it? If VLC player doesn’t see it, then you are hosed. If it does, then you can get perhaps screen capture software or something. But I’m 95% sure that you are up a creek without a paddle.

Yes, I jumped the gun moving from my PD-150 to the HXR-NX5U and just assuming I could point, shoot, and capture/transfer. Not too smart. Now I’m left with a “.mov” file that I cannot seem to open with Quicktime Player, FCP, HandBrake, vlc, or VoltaicHD, a file that shows as a 32.8 gb file in my capture scratch, a file that Quicktime Player says: “The file is not a movie file”. There must be some way to open this file. Dang!

The camera is really that simple…if you do things right. You have to back up the FULL CARD STRUCTURE, not just certain files. And it can be a drag if you have an older version of FCP. Sony took the AVCHD standard (HAHAHAHAHA!) and changed it…added LPCIM audio that messed up import times. Added custom timecode to the camera but didn’t tell any NLE maker where to find it. It took a guy at Divergent to find it and allow it to be added to the converted files with CLIPWRAP 2.
Camera makers LOVE to make new cameras, and new codecs, and leave NLE makers in the dark. Happens so often I lost count. NEVER buy the new new new cameras just on the market…wait to make sure the NLEs catch up.
Now they have…so the NXcam cameras are fine.
