Does Avid make inexpensive software that is tailor-made for capturing only? I have tons of tapes from several cameras from a mult-camera shoot and I’d love to capture on several systems simultaneously in order to save time…

I may be wrong but I believe a router and many manned stations are your best way to go.
    …only way to go.
An operator on each machine would have to hit capture but you could route the signal to as many workstations as ya like. Now, I have not tried interfacing with media captured with FreeDV but if its omfi, I think you may be in luck there. You’d still need multiple people to push da buttons. Alternativly, you could set these systems up yourself and if timing isn’t a factor, walk to each station yourself and hit capture.
    ?
dude, I dunno, I’m just brainstormin’ here.

It depends on what you call inexpensive.

If it were possible to do this, you would need a large amount of storage and network bandwidth to ingest all your tapes together – 25Mbits for each DV25 tape and more if you’re looking at DV50 or uncompressed standard definition.

You would also need to sync your recordings to keep your timecode together. Even then, you’ll have a mass of ingested media waiting for you to edit. It’s a balance between your time, your storage budget and your requirement to save time.

Avid do make a product called Capture Manager that can do this sort of ingesting but it is part of a broadcast infrastructure system requiring many hi-end systems working together and as such could hardly be described as inexpensive.

On the other hand, how many VTR’s do you have to hand that you can ingest from? Can you afford to tie-up your other systems?

I have three possible VTRs to choose from. I’m interested in the Free DVD approach. I might give it a test try!

    Thanks everyone!
