  • Capture settings DVCproHD varicam tape with 1200a panasonic deck

Posted by Maria Wardian on June 13, 2008 at 7:25 pm

I am trying to capture DVCpro HD tapes shot on a varicam with different frame rates (24, 48 and 60) on each tape. I am capturing from a panasonic 1200a deck connecting to a G5 Mac from firewire 400 going to my external Hard drive (Lacie d2 quadra) that is connected via firewire 800. I am capturing in FCP 6.0.2. I am playing footage back from a Macpro Dual-Core Intel Xeon with the processor speed: 2.66 GHz.

I tried capturing with the following settings:
    Compressor: DVCPRO HD – 720p60 48 kHz
    Pixel Aspect: 960X720
    TC rate and fps: 59.94
I unchecked the “remove advanced pulldown/duplicate frames” option

All my footage is a bit jumpy. The 24, 48 and 60fps – all jumpy even when viewing the footage in quicktime or try dropping it in with different sequence settings.

    What did I do wrong?
-Would it help to capture from a Mac Pro?
-Do I need higher quality capturing card than just firewire?
    -Are my capture settings wrong?
-Do I need to capture different frame rates differently?
**How can I capture the highest quality footage with just firewire card and G5 mac?

    OR

Is there a way of fixing the footage using the built in DVCpro Frame Rate Converter or cinema tools? Is it possible that it is just a playback problem?

    Thank you!
    -Maria

They shot all those formats on the same tape? Ugh. Then FCP is capturing them all at 60fps or whatever setting you started with (perhaps 23.98?). I have had instances where the DP shot 720p60 and 720p24 on the same tape…and what I had to do was do a CAPTURE NOW and when the frame rate changed, capture would stop due to a change in “cadence.” So I would adjust my Easy Setup to match and then capture now again.

But 48fps? Never had to deal with that.

Thanks for the advice. We captured the entire tape with a video rate of 59.94, which is what i was told is laid down on DVCpro HD tapes from the varicam, no matter what the frame rate was set at, so that’s how I captured everything. Though, even the footage that was captured at 59.94 is jumpy, it’s not just the 28 and 48 fps footage.

Could it be a setting I missed on the 1200a deck as well?
    thanks!

[Maria Wardian] “Though, even the footage that was captured at 59.94 is jumpy, it’s not just the 28 and 48 fps footage.”

That would mean that all the 48fps and 23.98fps was captured at 59.94, so it will look odd and jumpy, because the redundant frames have not been removed. And no, it isn’t a setting on that deck as far as I know, it is how you tell FCP to capture the footage.
