Capture Problem Sony Vegas with HDR FX7
Posted by Susan Fielding on December 5, 2010 at 7:35 pmI have scoured every thread and cannot find the solution. I am using Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0/Windows 7 Home Premium/64 bit. My camera is a Sony HDR FX7. When I try to capture, Vegas sees and controls the cameras functions, but no video is previewed or captured. I also tried to capture in Adobe premier CS3 and got the same results. I can capture DV when I activate iLink but it looks like crap and of course, is not HDV. I am at the end of my sanity here. PLEASE HELP!

December 6, 2010 at 6:22 pmThere are two capture utilities in Vegas Movie Studio. One is for DV and the other is for HDV. Are you sure that you are using the correct one? You must also have your camera in the correct mode, so the camera iLink must be set for HDV and you must use the HDV capture utility in Vegas Movie Studio. I assume your camera is connected via firewire.

December 6, 2010 at 7:31 pmI am using the internal HDV capture in Vegas and iLink is off on the camera. Yes, I am connected via firewire. I played around a bit more and now am able to capture HDV using Adobe Premier. I suppose it is an acceptable “work-around”, but I’d really like to figure out what is wrong with the Vegas set-up. Thanks for the suggestions… keep them coming:)

December 7, 2010 at 12:46 amIf you are using the internal HDV capture and iLINK CONV is OFF then everything is set correctly. I guess the fact that you finally got Premiere to capture proves that the camera is set correctly.
Does Vegas Movie Studio 9 “officially” support Windows 7? I thought it only supported Vista and VMS 10 supports Windows 7. That could be your problem. You might want to download the trial of VMS 10 HD and see if that can capture. If it can, it might be worth the US$64.95 to upgrade.

December 7, 2010 at 1:00 amAh, that could be the issue. I’ll give it a try. Thanks! I hadn’t considered that:)

I have upgraded my software to v.10 and am still having the same issue. Any other thoughts out there?

January 19, 2011 at 1:08 amwith a little more tinkering, I am able to capture only if I start the playback and reconnect to the device. Vegas will lock up after a bit and I have reconnect once again. I am completely stumped…

January 19, 2011 at 2:00 amYou might want to try another firewire cable or another firewire port on your computer. It’s really odd that works intermittently.

February 17, 2012 at 5:58 amI think i finally found the problem. After of months of trying everything, i went down to river to think. and what i thought was:
before my laptop crashed my Ilink worked all the time without a problem but now on my new Desktop its not working. At first i thought it was the XP – windows 7 difference but it wasn’t.
to use your SONY FX7 and other camcorders you need the same end cord. Huh, See when i was using 4 to 6 pin. Nothing was recognized. so i used a 4 to 4 pin cord and that worked immediately. I felt so stupid. and when i thought about it. That was the main difference between my laptop and Desktop. so use the same 4 to 4 pin cord and it should work. Let me know if it works for you

While this may have solved your problem, it is not true. Perhaps you just had a bad cord.
My computer only has 6 pin outputs and I connected it to my Sony HVR-Z1U with a 6-to-4 pin cable all the time and it works just fine. Like I said, you may have just had a bad firewire cable.

February 19, 2012 at 9:50 pmNaw i bought multiple cords and tried on different computers. That was the only thing that did it. I think they should try it on someone else computer with the same 4 pin Connection before buying new hardware though.
